About

It all began at Sebring, Ohio, an area long noted for pottery and fine ceramic ware. Although Spaulding was born at Sebring it was, we might say the "child" of Morris Feinberg. Without his guidance, foresight, and creative genius there would have been no Spaulding China Company that began in 1942. The company began operation in a garage. Needing more room the plant moved to an abandoned plant of the Alliance Vitreous China Company. They moved in a few years to the Sebring Rubber Company and installed the finest and most up to date machinery. They used a large continuous circular kiln with a capacity of 18,000 pieces a day. With the start of World War II that brought an end to the import of ceramic pieces from Japan. The production of ceramics was not critical to the war, so production was increased. The company prospered growing in volume to become at its peak the second largest artware pottery in the United States. After the end of the war there was severe competition from the Japanese that were flooding the market with decorative pottery at very competitive prices. With the changing market Feinberg decided to retire and close the business in 1957. I would like to acknowledge this information from Joe Devine  and his Collector's Guide to Royal Copley.
